The State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Hong Kong is a national research center in functional brain imaging. It conducts interdisciplinary research that combines state-of-the-art functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), nanoscience, and genetic neuroscience approaches to investigate brain and cognitive functions such as language, attention, perception, and memory. Comparisons of Chinese and other languages are at the heart of our research. Studies of neuroprotective, regenerative, and neurogenetic factors in the central nervous system are another important research direction of the Lab.
The establishment of this State Key Laboratory was approved by the Central Government's Ministry of Science and Technology of China in the summer of 2005. It is located in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Hong Kong, and brings together researchers from the Departments of Linguistics, Anatomy, Diagnostic Radiology, Psychology, Psychiatry, and the Genome Research Centre. Our partner is the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. Our efforts will work towards improving human health, discovering the neurophysiological basis of learning and perception, and enhancing education and communication.
Research in the lab is mainly supported by China's National Strategic Basic Research Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the Hong Kong government and the University of Hong Kong.
